Are you in town on Sat, June 7th? Are you willing to bike with City Councilors, or teach kids to ride safely, and thereby promote bicycling, on that day? Read on.
June 7th is National Trails Day, and the Santa Fe Conservation Trust is taking the lead to organize events along the Santa Fe Rail Trail, from the Santa Fe Rail Depot, all the way to Lamy.
Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico is organizing two events to promote bicycling in conjunction with the daylong celebration and we need your help.
1. COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE.
From 8:30-9:15 am, there will be Community Bike Rides from each quadrant of the City to the Railway Depot. Opening Ceremonies for the days events will be at 9:30 am at the SF Southern Railway Depot (near Guadalupe and Montezuma, behind Tomasitas). We've invited all the City Councilors, as well as a representative of Congressman Tom Udall to ride with us, and so far we've gotten commitments from a couple of them.
If you're willing to ride in the small groups (5-10 people) with your City Councilors, please contact me, and I'll put you in touch with the team leaders. The routes are being designed to illustrate needs in Santa Fe's bikeways system, and will be 3 miles or less. Some of the routes will be along the Rail Trail easement, so mountain bikes are suggested.
2. KIDS BIKE RODEO
From 2:30 - 4:00 pm, we will be hosting our second Kids Bike Safety Rodeo at the Railyard, on the parking area at the corner of Cerrillos and Guadalupe (where the Farmer's Market is in the mornings.) Volunteers are needed to help fit helmets (donated by St. Vincent Hospital Trauma Department), and staff the stations showing kids how to use turn signals, stop at stop signs, look both ways, etc. It's lots of fun! Please volunteer, if you can.
FINALLY:
All day there will be lots of walkers, runners, cyclists, birders, train-riders, etc enjoying the trail, and events along the way. There are five train stops where you can get on or off, and continue by foot, bike, etc. The stops are: Santa Fe High School, Rabbit Road Trailhead, Nine Mile Road, Avenida El Dorado in Eldorado, and Lamy. Or bike the whole 18 miles, and ride the train back! Here's a short description that we put in the NM Kids calendar:
