News - Legislative Wrapup , 2003 Session

Editorial by Dan Baker -

I thought it would be a good idea to put out a little wrap-up of the "bike-related" Bills that went through the mill this year... So we can think ahead for next year and see if there are specific projects that people might want to get involved with.

  • Prohibit Speed Humps, House Bill #53 - died in session. There was some vague language and other issues that would have opened the door for eliminating all traffic calming efforts. We would hope that more people will be getting involved in exploring options for traffic calming and come up with solutions that balance the needs of residents, motorists, and bikes on the roads.

  • Mile-Based Auto Insurance Coverage, House Bill #532 - died.

  • Safe Routes to School, Senate Bill #556 - passed, but funding was removed.

  • Beverage Container Deposit Act, House Bill #72 - died. We'd really like to see more people involved with this one, and get it revised to try again next year more closely modelled after successful programs in other states.
