News - Albertson's/Osco is installing Bike Racks

Report by Dan Baker, 4/17/2003 -

Kudos to Albertson's/Osco!

After recent bike-trailer grocercy shopping trips I was finally frustrated enough to go looking for web contacts to request bike rack installation... I was tired of locking my bike to the trash can or newspaper vending machine. I'd made several requests thru the in-store customer service without any visible effect over the last 6 months, so I went looking for corporate contacts.

I found Alberston's at http://www1.albertsons.com/corporate/ and Smith's at http://www.smithsfoodanddrug.com/contactus.htm and submitted my request that they encourage all stores to review their "bike-friendliness" and install bike racks for patrons and employees.

Much to my delight I got an email back from Al Hoskins, Director of Operations for Osco Drug, about 24 hours later to the effect that they were in the process of review and ordering racks for stores that didn't already have them. No word back yet from Smith's but I guess I'll keep working on my local store manager.

The upshot of this is "Ask for what you want!"

If there are stores or public facilities you bike to, and there aren't any racks... Ask for some! Many cities have programs to install racks (for free) at business locations requesting them.

Keep the rubber side down.... - Dan
