Report by Dan Baker (2/24/2003)
Feb. 20, 2003 Gail Ryba and I had a joint meeting with Brian Drypolcher and Deb Love from the Trust for Public Land and Congressman Udall to go thru the current status and major project points of the Santa Fe "Railyard Project", and introduce BCNM as a statewide bike advocacy group.

The Railyard Project, and the Santa Fe River Trail Easement Projects, are collaborative efforts between several non-profit groups including us, (BCNM), the Trust for Public Land (TPL), and several others. The goal in Santa Fe is to create a contiguous network of safe trails and paths serving population centers from the Historic Plaza and Railyard area, across St. Francis (US84-285) and following the river and rail easements all the way out to the Community College area, and perhaps all the way out to Lamy!
Crossing St. Francis is a fairly major undertaking as it is 7 lanes wide at that point, and very busy. Several options are being evaluated including Overpass and Underpass designs. This specific component of the project is anticipated to be costly, so we are attempting to secure Federal funds for the majority of it, with a commitment of a portion to be funded by the city. The issue has been accepted for evaluation by the City Council, and we will be encouraging cyclists and pedestrians to contact Council members to express your support.
The Railyard project itself [click for details] is an exciting revitalization of an area that will have facilities for outdoor events like the Farmer's Market, Shakespeare in the Park, retail shops, underground parking and other amenities.
