News - BCNM Minutes from 12/11/2002 meeting

Meeting Minutes
For December 11, 2002, Second Street Brewery, Santa Fe, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
Bicycle Coalition of NM – Santa Fe

16 attendees, Gail Ryba, BCNM Board President, led the meeting

AGENDA:
1. Bike-to-the-Legislature - (between Jan 21 and Mar 22, 2003) - planning a date and event
2. Bike-to-Work Day - May, 2003 - deciding how big we want to make it this year.
3. Outreach campaign - finding new bicycle activists in Santa Fe, or re-discovering those that have drifted out of sight.

The group discussed events that would raise the awareness of bicycle commuting and bicycle transportation. In particular, we discussed Bike-to-Work Day, and how much interest there was in the Santa Fe Community. The general consensus of the group was the BTWD is a good idea.

Points that were raised:

  • Larry Delgado, Mayor, supported it in 2000. We need to approach current mayor to get support, and publicity.
  • At the Plaza were coffee, donuts.
  • Donations by Wild Oats.
  • Need to get things like permits
  • Site at the First National bank, across from the clock. 7-9 am
  • Andre, from Boulder, part of the Bicycle Coalition of Boulder, described their event; contests between companies with highest percentages of cyclists.
  • Sarah, from Berkeley, CA ; similar experience and added that showers are available in downtown Oakland, CA
  • Roughly 100 people went to Plaza , but not many people work on or near the Plaza, so doesn’t make a lot of sense as Bike-to-Work. Need to find an alternate that might inspire actual commuters.

    Possible "satellite" locations:

  • NM School for the Deaf
  • District Attorney’s office, 327 Sandoval
  • St. John’s College
  • Baptist Church on Old Pecos Trail – where people go by.
  • Rob and Charlies bike shop

The Yellow bike progam of Portland was mentioned. Concept is that city-owned bikes, usually from Police recovery, are painted and left in racks in high-pedestrian areas such as plaza area to assist tourists.

How to Advertise our activities, and bike advocacy of BCNM, in general?

  • Illuminite fabric "bikenm.org" tags for people to wear.
  • Stencil/embroidery existing outer wear.
  • bumper stickers like "my other car is a BIKEnm.org"

Laura mentioned the issues of New Urbanism, like those pursued by 1000 Friends of New Mexico. "Road Diets" are necessary. "Horizontal traffic calming"

Dan mentioned Old Pecos Trail needs graphics and shoulder repair for bicycle movement. The road is a designated bike route, and currently very unsafe.

We need to follow roadway projects, each and every one. For Old Pecos Trail there is to be a light at San Mateo/Camino Lejo, which will ease crossing, and link into the bike lanes. We need to make sure it has bike triggers.

Quala mentioned that we should get developers involved for all new projects with regard to street development and arterial planning. Police, as well.

Getting fresh paint onto stripes would be helpful. Also, we need to work with Public Works to address re-striping key right-turn lanes with obvious bike positioning per safety standards.

We agreed to be a regular, friendly presence at City Council meetings, once a month.
ACTION. On January 8th, Quala and Dan plan to attend the City Council meeting and indicate cyclists interest in expanding bicycle facilities to promote bicycles transportation, and to say that the study by Councilor Lopez was a great idea.

Dan mentioned that bicycle tourism is underdeveloped here. Look at Boulder, Frisco, Colorado. Hopefully we can develop relationships with local business to voice desire to promote bike tourism.
