Smart Cycling Course Descriptions
Traffic Skills 101 – This class if for everyone who rides bike anywhere they want to go! You’ll learn how to ride your bike as a vehicular cyclist, how to do a bike safety check, perform on-bike hazard avoidance maneuvers, repair tires/tubes and increase your cycling confidence. Student manual provided. Recommend for individuals 15 and older. Prerequisite course for the LCI Seminar. 9 hours
Traffic Skills 201 – This class is for the advance cyclist that has taken TS 101 and wants to delve deeper into fitness and physiology, training for longer rides, and prepare for foul weather and night riding. Student manual provided. Recommended for individuals 15 and older. 12 hours
Commuting – This class is for anyone who is currently, or wants to begin, bicycle commuting to work or school. This course is a follow-up to Traffic Skills 101 and explores route selection, dealing with cargo and clothing, foul weather riding, and bike parking as well as other bicycle commuting issues. Recommended for individuals 15 and older. 3 hours
Motorists Education – This class is for anyone who drives a motor vehicle. This course is easily added to a driver’s education curriculum, continuing education programs for car, bus, truck drivers, and diversion training for motorist who violate traffic laws. Materials include Share the Road literature for both bicyclists and motorists. Recommend for all motor vehicles drivers. 3 hours
Kids 1 / Parents – This class is for parents of children enrolled in Kids 2. Parents learn how to perform bike safety check, properly fit a helmet, and correctly size a bike. Parents are informed of current state laws about wearing helmets, the pit falls of wrong way riding, and view a video entitled “Kids Eye View.” 1 hour
Kids 2 / Kids – This class is for 5th & 6th graders and covers the same topics as Traffic Skills 101 as well as explores safe routes for kids to ride to school. 7 hours
Bicycling 123 Program
LAB partnered with the National Bike Dealers Association (NBDA) to create the Bicycling 123 curriculum. The following course may be offered when sponsored by a local bike shop that is a member of the NABA. To find out if your local bike shop is a NBDA member go to www.nbda.com. LCIs can teach Bicycling 123 Youth and Bicycling 123 New & Returning Rider courses. Only Master LCI may certify Bicycling 123 Youth Instructors and Bicycling 123 Skills Instructors. Bicycling 123 Youth – For youth 12 – 15 years old. Thirteen stations, 4 administrative stations, 9 bike activity stations designed to teach youth real world on-bike in-traffic scenarios. 2 hours
Bicycling 123 New & Returning – For new cyclist or those returning to cycling after years off the bike. Designed to build confidence and offer practice with starting, stopping and signaling. Offers on-bike skills in a quiet setting of a parking lot or park. 4 hours
Bicycling 123 Youth and Skills Instructors Certification Courses – Candidates for Youth Instructor are typically adults that volunteer with youth groups and schools. Candidates for Skills instructor are typically employees that work at the member NBDA bike shops and lead rides for the bike shop or want to offer customers basic bike education.
