Tammy Schurr, Bicycle Education Coordinator

Tammy Schurr, BCNM Bicycle Education Coordinator
LCI # 1294
Tammy was born and raised in Albuquerque. She moved to Las Cruces in 1980 to attend NMSU. Her previous career was with Waldenbooks as a Store Manager. Taking Adventure Cycling’s Leadership Training Course in 2003, Tammy now leads and directs tours for Adventure Cycling in NM, CA, AZ, CO, ID and TX. To date she’s lead, staffed and/or directed 30 Adventure Cycling tours.
Her teaching background comes from many sources. In her career at Waldenbooks she trained employees towards becoming managers and as substitute teacher for five years with Las Cruces Public Schools. Last year she taught LABs Motorist Education at Las Cruces High’s Driver’s Ed classes. She’s on Adventure Cycling’s Leadership Development Team and she’s occasionally serves as a Leadership Training Adviser during Adventure Cycling Leadership Training Courses.
Seeking riding partners in 2003 she co-founded the local women’s cycling group, the R.O.Y.A.L.S. which lead to her desire to become knowledgeable about group riding, bike maintenance, and helping her cycling friends. She took LABs Road One Course and LCI Seminar in Tucson in 2005. Upon returning to Las Cruces she immediately and started teaching Road One Courses. She’s honored to have mentored 10 individuals towards becoming LCIs seven of them in Las Cruces.
In Sept. ’09 Tammy started her position with the Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico as their Bicycle Education Coordinator. Her role is to facilitate and assist League of American Bicyclist certified League Cycling Instructors (LCIs) in teaching Bike Education around the state through a program called “Train the Trainer.” More specifically she recruits new LCIs, mentors new LCIs through their training, forms LCI Teaching Teams to teach Bike Education in their communities, identifies resources to assist LCIs, and provides teaching aids and materials to help LCI Teaching Teams get started and maintain their Bike Education Programs.
Tammy is either researching an area she wants to ride/lead, educating others about vehicular cycling, dreaming about hitting the open road, or riding her bike. Tammy says, “It is a joy to combine my passion for cycling into my vocation. I’m so excited about the BCNM Bicycle Education Coordinator position. I’m looking forward to supporting NM LCIs towards educating bicyclists and motorists in our goal to made New Mexico a Bike Friendly state.”
