Mission ...

To increase the number of bicyclists in New Mexico by promoting cycling, providing safety education, and advocating for the rights of cyclists.

Methods ...

The Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico employs a number of methods in working toward our goal of making New Mexico a top ranked "bike-friendly" state. In addition to local advocacy groups, we hope to bring the power of a united voice to our State Legislature and Public Works planning groups. To assist the formation and effectiveness of local groups we are documenting programs that have been found effective in other towns and cities. We hope to establish an online resource that will serve as a central location for advocacy groups to share ideas, information, and a collective voice when it is time to vote on road planning and other projects that affect the biking community.

  • Assist in formation and effectiveness of local advocacy groups.

  • Document programs and standards that are effective for local groups to use with Public Works planning, Law Enforcement, and local education for motorists and cyclists.

  • Attend State public planning committee meetings and creating relationships with appropriate State officials to improve the consideration of bicycle traffic in road construction and maintenance.

  • Initiate and promote events to raise public awareness of cycling.

That's the high-level summary... BCNM activities can be divided roughly into four categories, known a the "4E’s" of planning: Education, Encouragement, Engineering and Enforcement. If you would like to read a more detailed report on our methods, [click here]

Funding ...

The Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico obtains funding from several sources. As a non-profit organization (EIN 85-0484160), we depend on donations from individuals and businesses for funding our activities which require capital expenses. Some of our efforts help obtain federal, state, or private Grant money, which is usually earmarked for specific projects, such as an underpass, overpass, or a section of trail to be constructed or maintained.

Where do your donations go?

(a neat little pie-chart showing allocation of expenses will get inserted here soon...)
